Trouble-Plagued 'Princess Di Fountain' Finally Reopens
Doubtless even Princess Diana would be perplexed at the troubles that have plagued the $6.6 million fountain built in her honor in London’s Hyde Park. The ring-shaped waterfeature has been closed to the public twice in as many months. It took years for the memorial fountain to even be built due to bureaucratic bickering over what kind of tribute would be appropriate for the popular princess, killed in a Paris car accident in 1997. Finally the official opening day arrived July 6, with Queen Elizabeth presiding.

But the next day, a severe storm hit Britain, filling the fountain with leaves and debris and causing it to flood; a week later, a blocked pump forced its closure. No sooner had the waterfeature reopened than two adults and a child were hospitalized after slipping on algae-covered stones in the streams that glide along the 210-meter trough. This time the fountain was closed for a month. It’s back in operation, but the Royal Parks has implemented some new rules, according to MSNBC.com. Visitors may no longer enter the fountain; they can only sit on the side and dip their hands or feet into the water. And more park personnel have been assigned to the site to control crowds and ensure compliance.

Pools Rate High with Travelers

What do travelers want in a hotel? Apparently they look for places that offer complimentary continental breakfasts and have swimming pools, for starters. A recent consumer survey conducted by the Internet-based, hotel-booking agency Hotels.com ranked pools as the second favorite hotel amenity of travelers, behind continental breakfasts.

The “How Do You Hotel” Survey was created to gauge the purchasing behavior and attitudes of consumers when choosing their lodgings. According to the study, 56 percent of vacationers choose pools as the second most important hotel courtesy, followed by luxury-room amenities, Jacuzzi bathtubs and fitness centers and spas.
